The Board of Education of the Albuquerque Public Schools (APS) has reopened its search to hire an outstanding educational leader to serve as the District’s superintendent beginning July 1, 2021. The search was suspended in March 2020 due to COVID-19 concerns and restrictions. The search is being reopened with the understanding that the semi-finalists under consideration last spring will still move forward in the process, if they are interested. In addition, HYA is accepting new applications for the position. Board members will review new applications in January and decide if any additional semi-finalist candidates will be added to the list of candidates to be interview by the Board in late January or early February.
The ideal candidate will be a collaborative leader who puts the needs of students first in the decision-making process and who has experience in a large, diverse urban environment. Candidates should have experience at the classroom, school, and district levels, along with strong communication skills to engage constituents in meaningful ways and to keep the organization moving forward in an aligned direction and systematic manner. Candidates should also understand the needs and parameters of operating a large urban school district during these challenging times of a pandemic.
Albuquerque is a unique community with a long tradition of valuing its diversity and celebrating its heritage. The District provides for school choice and serves approximately 80,000 students in 143 schools. APS authorizes 30 charter schools with another 25 charter schools being authorized by the Public Education Commission. APS encompasses 1200 square miles of rural, urban, and suburban areas.
For further information about the search, please contact Hank Gmitro, HYA Chief Search Associate and lead associate on the Albuquerque Public Schools superintendent search. He can be reached at email@example.com.
Applications close on January 6, 2021. Applicants should be aware that all submitted applications fall under the Inspection of Public Records guidelines in New Mexico and will be released to the public.
