Glendale Unified School District (GUSD) is inviting applications for the position of Superintendent of Schools.
HYA is accepting applications through April 25, 2019. A start date of July 1 is preferred.
GUSD earned a reputation as one of the top districts in the country for its record of academic excellence, impassioned commitment to its diverse student body, opportunities and access for all to innovative programs and practices, and dedication to its mission to “provide a high quality education that addresses the unique potential of each student in a safe, engaging environment.” GUSD is comprised of 32 schools serving more than 26,000 students in transitional kindergarten through 12th grade.
Glendale takes it name from the Jewel City, and it is truly a district of jewels. Nine GUSD schools have earned the U.S. Office of Education’s highest designation, the National Blue Ribbon. Additionally, 26 GUSD schools have been recognized as California Distinguished Schools and 17 of the district’s 18 Title I schools have been named Title I Achieving Schools. Moreover, the district’s seven dual language immersion programs are nationally renowned and districts across the country seek to emulate this success story.
GUSD is also a jewel of diversity. Approximately 65 languages are spoken and 22% of students are classified as English Language Learners (EL), with Armenian, Spanish, and Korean being the three predominant languages of EL children. Of its 26,000 students, 50.2 % of students are eligible for free and reduced lunch, 57% of the school district’s enrollment is Caucasian – including more than 10,000 students of Armenian descent. Also, 21% are Latino, 12% Asian/Asian American, 6% Filipino, and 1% African American. The district receives broad and deep support from the five communities it serves, local businesses, an active educational foundation, and engaged parent groups. Approximately 1300 full-time teachers deliver an exceptional education, and students are also supported by a full-time classified staff 1,100 as well as 600 part-time employees.
GUSD is seeking a thoughtful, analytical, collaborative leader for its next superintendent. Preferred qualifications include experience in leading and serving diverse and complex educational systems; a deep understanding of and experience with the financial, facility, and instructional aspects of a large school system; and an innovative thinker and tangible presence who works with closely with the school board and stakeholders to continue to move the district forward.
