Job Description

The Highland Park Independent School District (HPISD) is seeking an accomplished, dynamic leader to serve the district as the ninth superintendent since first opening its doors more than 100 years ago in 1914.  THIS IS AN EXTRAORDINARY OPPORTUNITY IN ONE OF AMERICA’S VERY BEST DISTRICTS. HPISD is located within a thriving, picturesque area of Dallas and serves nearly 7,000 students on eight campuses: five new elementary schools, one intermediate school, one middle school and one high school.  

In the words of its mission statement, HPISD IS “grounded in tradition and with an unyielding commitment to excellence, academics, integrity, citizenship, and service, empowers each and every student to achieve post-secondary success.” The faculty and staff have successfully transformed these words to actions and outcomes as Highland Park alumni have made their mark in every imaginable field including a Nobel Prize Laureate; Academy, Grammy and Tony Award winners; Pulitzer Prize recipients; Olympic gold medalists; Rhodes scholars; a three-time Cy Young Award winner, a Heisman Trophy winner, and Hall of Fame athletes; an astronaut; a governor; and a long list of  law and business leaders, entrepreneurs, scientists, doctors, and artists. 97% of HP graduates attend college and enter some of the most challenging and prestigious universities in the world.

An equally important indicator of success is how the district lives  its motto:  Enter to Learn, Go Forth to Serve. Starting in the early elementary grades, students begin to learn the importance of giving back to others through community service. Through this focus HPISD has earned a reputation for outreach to Dallas area families and school districts where they have made a tangible, positive impact.

The community actively supports the schools by giving tens of thousands of hours of their time, sharing their many talents, and providing significant, unparalleled financial support through the numerous parent groups like PTAs and Dads Club in addition to a strong Education Foundation. Moreover, upwards of 70% of taxpayers voted in favor of the recent tax levy to support teachers. Likewise, local businesses and non-profits generously provide human and financial resources and neighboring Southern Methodist University is an important partner.

Minimally, applicants must have multi-year, successful executive level educational leadership experiences in an organization of comparable complexity, size, scope, and success.  Sustaining district traditions while advancing the success and growth of all students will be an essential task for the next leader. Experience in communities with similar educational values, expectations and demographics is highly desirable, and an Ed.D. or Ph.D. is strongly preferred.  Candidates must possess or be immediately eligible for a Texas Superintendent certificate.

A multi-year contract will be offered with a highly competitive compensation package.
