Our Community and District
Onalaska School District is located in beautiful Southwest Washington in Lewis County, on scenic Highway 508. Our proximity to Mt. Rainier, Mt. St. Helens, rivers, lakes, ocean beaches, and the Puget Sound make our location a highly desirable location for a wide range of outdoor recreation during all four seasons. We are near the midpoint between Seattle, WA and Portland, OR for access to both urban centers only a 90-minute drive away.
Our schools enjoy a long tradition of community support and many families we serve have been part of the community for generations. Our community values a traditional educational program focused on providing each student the support and assistance needed as individuals to develop their greatest potential. We do this by providing a strong curriculum in Math, Reading, Science, and factual History. Our goal is to teach students to think for themselves and develop problem-solving skills which they can apply to life’s challenges.
Our Schools: Onalaska Elementary School serves students in Preschool through grade 5. Onalaska Middle School serves grades 6-8 and Onalaska High School serves grades 9-12. We partner with the Capital Region Special Education Cooperative to serve eligible special education students and our Preschool is part of Washington’s Early Childhood Education and Assistance Program (ECEAP). Our schools serve over 800 students and their families.
Onalaska School District seeks a qualified, highly visible, collaborative new leader to work closely with the school board, students, staff, parents, and the community. A leader prepared to develop a strategic plan with the Board utilizing input from our stakeholders is highly desired to ensure district goals and priorities reflect our community values and voices.
Experience with district level responsibilities and familiarity with Superintendent expectations within a smaller school district and community context is also desired. Onalaska seeks a candidate that can communicate effectively to all entities to promote greater understanding, transparency and unity. Onalaska is looking for a person who is willing to make a long term commitment to the district.
Current WA State Superintendent Certification
Prior experience as a classroom teacher and school administrator
Aware of recent state legislation for public schools and corresponding local impacts
Familiar with Washington State Learning Standards and experienced with curriculum alignment processes
Demonstrated experience with data-driven planning and assessment processes
Exceptional leadership, management skills
Strong interpersonal skills, including transparent and respectful interactions with students, staff, families, and community members
Demonstrated exemplary communication skills in listening, speaking, and writing
Models high standards of professional and ethical behaviors at all times and operates consistently with integrity and transparency
District level administrative experience in P-12 education
Experience with strategic plan development and implementation
Experience partnering with community members and local organizations in support of public education
District experience with operations, including financial services, transportation, food services
District experience with facilities planning, school funding (levies/bonds), and grant writing
Experience on or working closely with a Board of Directors, Business Mgr., and Human Resources Mgr.
Demonstrates a growth mindset and values continuous improvement
Strengths and Opportunities
The School Board has identified the following strengths and opportunities. HYA is currently gathering stakeholder feedback which will be used to publish a Leadership Profile Report which will include additional strengths and challenges, and will also summarize leadership qualities and characteristics most desired. This report will be presented to the Board at their regular meeting on January 26, 2023.
District Leadership/Teamwork: The Onalaska School Board is dedicated and committed to the effectiveness of the district in serving all students and families. They are seeking a superintendent to work with them to provide responsible governance, effective leadership, clear communication, and academic excellence.
Skilled Communicator and Problem-Solver: A leader skilled in navigating controversial matters where diverse and sometimes opposing perspectives and opinions are present is strongly desired. The ability to facilitate problem-solving processes where people feel heard and respected is essential.
Engaged and Visible: The Board seeks a leader who is visible and approachable who is committed to becoming actively involved in schools, events, and the life of the Onalaska community. Building upon our existing level of community support will be an ongoing priority for all district leaders.
