Dr. Marilyn Birnbaum has been involved in education for over 40 years. Starting her career as an English teacher for North Plainfield Public Schools in New Jersey, the district recruited her to develop the first adult high school. Her experience with ESL and basic skills initiatives and passion for program development led to her role as assistant superintendent, focusing on curriculum and instruction; professional growth; and data analysis. Subsequently, she became the district’s superintendent, working closely with the board of education, as she directed a cohesive administrative team; nurtured collaborative relationships with outside sources, such as Johnson and Johnson; developed and facilitated a $32,000,000 building project; and supported a comprehensive technology plan. After retiring, Dr. Birnbaum was called upon to support Cranford Public Schools in New Jersey, serving as interim superintendent for two years.

Dr. Birnbaum’s experience also has crossed over to business and industry. As a training and development consultant, she designed and implemented various effective writing programs along with manuals for diverse employee groups; developed and collaborated on various human resource development programs; and advised start-up technology companies with educational programs and practices.

Dr. Birnbaum also has shared her knowledge with prospective teachers by serving as a part-time lecturer at Rutgers University, Graduate School of Education and was honored with the 2007 Distinguished Leader in Education Award. Additionally, she has been a mentor to new superintendents and coach to new principals in urban settings.

Dr. Birnbaum has been affiliated with numerous professional associations and has earned various honors, including the 2011 New Jersey Association of School Administrators Central Regional Superintendent of the Year.

Interested in parent/community involvement as well as assessment, Dr. Birnbaum has written and co-authored numerous papers and articles. She has also offered various presentations, such as “Teamwork (Not Personalities): Strategies for Building a Board-Superintendent Team.”
