Dr. Milton L James is a native of North Carolina. He attended schools in Plainfield, New Jersey and graduated from Plainfield High School in 1967. Dr. James has had an extensive career in education and has held a variety of positions at various school districts besides the Plainfield School District. He did his undergraduate work at North Carolina A & T State University in Greensboro, North Carolina. He has studied at Kean University, Montclair State University, and Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He has earned a Bachelors degree in Physical Education and Health, a Masters degree in Administration and Supervision and a Doctoral degree in Administrative Educational Leadership. Dr. James began his career as a physical education and health teacher in September 1972 at Plainfield High School. While at Plainfield High School he held several positions: coach, class advisor, acting guidance counselor, acting physical education department chairperson, acting athletic director, supervisor of adult education, and acting vice principal. He then moved on to the Hillside Public Schools Hillside, New Jersey where he became vice principal and principal of Hillside High School. Dr. James was the first African-American administrator at Hillside High School. He received numerous awards for his dedication and leadership while at Hillside High School. Dr. James also served as a committee member of the New Jersey Interscholastic Athletic Association for 16 years and was the chairperson of the Controversies Committee for five years.
Dr. James retired in New Jersey in 2005 and repurposed as the assistant superintendent for secondary education in the Pocono Mountain School District, Swiftwater, Pennsylvania. In this position he supervised over 5000 students, over 500 professional staff members, and over 25 administrators. Again, Dr. James was a first, that is, the first African-American serving in the capacity of a district administrator in the Pocono Mountain School District. He retired a second time from the state of Pennsylvania in July 2012. Dr. James decided that he would rather continue helping young people, instead of relaxing in his easy chair, by becoming an adjunct professor at William Paterson University Wayne, New Jersey. He presently holes two positions: supervisor of student teachers and practicum students and field supervisor for teacher candidates who want to become administrators in the
Paterson Public School District. He is also a consultant for HYA/ECRA consulting firm, which deals mainly with superintendent searches for school districts throughout the United States Dr. James has made a tremendous impact on the lives of thousands of young people throughout his 43 years in the field of education. He has worked hard to improve the quality of life on a daily basis while providing safe institutions for learning. Educators under his leadership have been able to prepare students for the challenges of higher education at county, state, private, and Ivy League schools. Dr. James believes that setting goals, being a positive role model for young people ,and the grace of the Almighty has made him the educator that he
continues to be today.
Dr. James is married to the former Ms. Joan Allen with this union, they have three adult children, six grandchildren, and two great granddaughters. His favorite pastime is listening to R&B music, sports appreciation, and spending time with his growing family.
