Dr. Carlton Jenkins has served as Superintendent of the Madison Metropolitan School District from August 2020 -July 2023. Dr. Jenkins also serves as a Clinical Faculty Member in the Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis Department at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Most recently, Dr. Jenkins received an academic faculty appointment at Michigan State University as an Executive in Residence.
Dr. Jenkins has had a remarkable career as an educator. He held several senior-level positions in different districts successfully retiring from Wisconsin as the national equity champion of the year by Open Up Resources for the 2022 -2023 academic year. He served as Superintendent of Robbinsdale Area Schools in Minnesota. He completed a stint as Chief Academic Officer of Atlanta Public Schools in Georgia. He also served as Superintendent of Saginaw Public Schools in Michigan. Finally, before becoming a superintendent, Dr. Jenkins served successfully as a teacher, administrator, coach, and leadership roles in Beloit, Wisconsin, Columbus, and Ohio.
Throughout his career, Dr. Jenkins has impacted learning outcomes, policy and practice as an educational and business consultant as well as leadership mentor. Some of his work has included consulting on turnaround school transformation as well as consulting on leadership strategies for Fortune Fifty companies.
He played college football at the University of Tennessee Chattanooga before transferring to Mississippi Valley State University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in health and physical education. He also earned master’s and doctoral degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. His dissertation earned the distinction of dissertation of the year in 2009 in the Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis department at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
