About Company

John Barry  is a nationally recognized leadership expert who has served as a military combat commander, public school superintendent of the year in Colorado, nonprofit chief executive, and aerospace museum President/CEO. His distinguished 30-year career in the United States Air Force culminated in serving as Military Assistant to the Secretary of Defense and as Executive Director of the Accident Investigation Board following the Space Shuttle Columbia tragedy. As Superintendent, he led one of Colorado’s largest school districts, improving student achievement through a relentless focus on accountability, instructional excellence, and organizational ownership. His broad leadership experience across military, education, government, and nonprofit sectors provides a unique perspective on leading transformational change in complex organizations.

Throughout his career, General Barry has believed that sustainable improvement begins by creating a culture of ownership in which every individual accepts responsibility for the success of the mission. He has consistently applied strategic planning, collaborative leadership, performance measurement, crisis management, and professional development to build high-performing organizations capable of adapting to changing environments. These leadership principles form the foundation of his book Super Ownership: How School Superintendents Can Elevate K–12 Systems, which provides practical strategies for creating lasting educational transformation.

General Barry provides executive leadership consulting for school districts, boards of education, superintendents, and leadership teams seeking to improve organizational performance and student outcomes. His consulting focuses on superintendent transitions, strategic planning, executive coaching, board-superintendent governance, leadership development, organizational transformation, data-informed decision-making, community engagement, crisis leadership, and the development of career pathways and external learning opportunities for students. Drawing upon decades of experience leading large, mission-driven organizations, he helps educational leaders build cultures of ownership that strengthen trust, improve performance, and produce sustainable results for students, educators, and their communities.
