Michael Cromartie is an accomplished educational leader with nearly 30 years of comprehensive experience in public K–12 education in Virginia. His career includes executive leadership roles as Superintendent, Chief of Schools, Assistant/Deputy Superintendent for Instruction and Human Resources, and High School Principal, complemented by more than a decade as an adjunct professor of educational leadership. His background combines deep expertise in instructional leadership with extensive experience in superintendent–school board relations, strategic planning, fiscal and community communication, change management, and executive coaching. An important achievement was the recognition of his school division recognized for top regional performance in reading and mathematics, innovation in instructional technology, and national honors for communication and budget transparency.
Dr. Cromartie’s leadership approach is grounded in collaboration, transparency, trust, and principled problem-solving. Drawing on leadership experience across both urban and rural settings and diverse governance structures, he brings a relationship-centered approach to working with boards, superintendents, leadership teams, staff, and communities. He understands the complexities of educational governance and the importance of building strong, productive relationships between governing bodies and executive leaders.
As an educational consultant, Dr. Cromartie specializes in superintendent-school board relations and executive leadership coaching, with additional expertise in strategic planning, culture and climate assessment, and leadership development. Having built and supported administrative teams at the school, division, and superintendent levels, he helps boards and superintendents clarify roles, strengthen governance relationships, navigate organizational challenges, and align around shared priorities. He also works with school and division leaders at every level to strengthen leadership capacity and translate organizational vision into effective practice.
