The Transition to a New Superintendent

Utilizing HYA’s search process for a seamless welcome at SFPS

HYA’s search process culminates with the Transition phase. Included in the search fee is a transition meeting with the new Superintendent and representative(s) of the Board regarding the information learned throughout the search process, in particular, the Community and Leadership Profile Survey from the extensive community engagement. 

A lot of information about the community stakeholders’ perceptions is collected as well as formal information from the survey regarding district strengths and areas for improvement. HYA employs a research-based approach to identifying the goals, needs, and priorities of the school system. This is invaluable information for the Superintendent day one of employment. The information provides a springboard for the new Superintendent’s own listen and learn tour with community stakeholders. In addition to the survey information, HYA conducted 64 community engagement sessions.

This is the best practice that the new San Francisco Unified School District’s Superintendent, Matt Wayne, incorporated into his transition. “Listening to SFUSD students, families, staff members and community organizations is my first priority. Appointing a new leader is the first step toward accomplishing organizational and student goals for success.
