Dr. Kellie Crawford Sorey has over 30 years of higher education experience in academic and student affairs. She has served in various roles at Tidewater Community College, a large, multi-campus community college in Virginia that serves over 30,000 students. In her current position there as the Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs, Kellie is primarily responsible for:
- curriculum development and implementation
- faculty credentialing
- student learning assessment
- dual enrollment and high school partnerships
- transfer agreement development and review
- policy development and implementation
- accreditation preparedness and compliance
In addition to community college experience, Dr. Sorey dedicated 10 years in a distance learning division at Old Dominion University, a public research university, and 2 years to Randolph College, a private liberal arts college.
Kellie also has considerable experience as a peer evaluator and committee chair for SACSCOC where she evaluates and/or oversees the evaluation of institutions with respect to accreditation principles and requirements and federal requirements.
Dr. Sorey has been active with committee work across the state as well as nationally. For example, she served as the Co-Chair of the Committee on Transfer for the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV) and Chair of the Virginia Community College System’s Educational Programs Committee. During the past few years, she has served on the planning committee for SACSCOC’s annual conference and is currently serving on the Ad Hoc Strategic Planning Committee for Virginia Beach City Public Schools. Kellie serves as an associate editor of Higher Education Politics and Economics (formerly Academic Perspectives in Higher Education). Over the past 5+ years, she has also served as an adjunct faculty member and guest lecturer for ODU’s higher education doctoral program, and has been a dissertation committee member for multiple doctoral candidates.
Dr. Sorey earned a Ph.D. in Community College Leadership from Old Dominion University and a master’s degree in student Personnel Administration from Virginia Tech.
