Academy Information
The superintendent program is a 10 session program beginning in November of 2026 and ending in April of 2027.
Howard University’s School of Education, in collaboration with HYA, designed this leadership academy to bolster K-12 Educational Leadership. This program is tailored to enhance the representation of Black, Hispanic, women, and other underrepresented groups in leadership positions within U.S. public schools. This initiative marks a significant step forward in our commitment to nurturing exemplary leadership in education.
This program is a certificated program through Howard University. Individuals will receive a certificate from Howard University upon completion of each program.Â
This program includes an executive coach for each participant. The participant’s coach is part of the structure and goals of the program to enhance skills, set goals, prepare for career advancement, and improve personal and organizational performance.

*The first and last sessions are in-person. All other sessions will be virtual. The opening session on November 13-14 will be held in Montgomery, Alabama at the Civil Rights Museum, and the final session on April 3 will be held at Howard University in Washington D.C. Participants are responsible for their own travel costs and room and board for these sessions.

Curriculum:
Alignment to PSEL standards and researched backed best practice. Guest lecturers are a part of every session; they are experts from the field and are uniquely qualified to address the contemporary issues facing education leaders.
Academy Leaders
Dr. Shawn Joseph
Dr. Shawn Joseph is a scholar, practitioner, and university trustee. He currently serves as the superintendent of Prince George’s County Public Schools, MD. As an Associate Professor at Howard University’s School of Education, Dr. Joseph has published scholarly work focused on the experiences of Black superintendents, STEM access, and case studies in Educational Leadership. He is currently on leave from Howard University, but serves as an adjunct faculty member supporting the continued development of aspiring superintendents. In addition, Dr. Joseph is a trustee at Lincoln Iniversity, America’s oldest degree granting Historically Black College.
