Dr. Stephanie Wood-Garnett holds a doctorate in Educational & Organizational Leadership from the University of Pennsylvania and has nearly 30 years of experience in P-16 education. She heads the Alliance for Transformative Education (AFTE) and previously served as an Associate Vice President of the Educational Testing Service and President of the Institute for Student Achievement division which focused on school and district improvement. 

Throughout her professional career Dr. Wood-Garnett has consistently demonstrated a profound commitment to transforming educational systems, ensuring that all young people are better prepared for postsecondary education, careers, and life. Her prior roles include serving as the Assistant Commissioner of Teacher and Leader Effectiveness for the New York State Education Department; Executive Director of the State Improvement Grant (SIG) for the District of Columbia Office of State Superintendent of Education; and Executive Director of Exemplary Programs for a school district in Washington State. 

Dr. Wood-Garnett has also spearheaded national initiatives funded by the U.S. Department of Education aimed at enhancing outcomes for students across the nation. She served as Director of the Center for Comprehensive School Reform and Improvement (school reform) and Director of the IDEA Local Implementation by Local Administrators Project (special education).  

At the higher education level, Dr. Wood-Garnett taught “Race and Disability” at the University of Washington (Seattle) and has been a sought-after lecturer at numerous institutions including St. John’s University; State University of New York – Oswego; Bank Street College of Education; State University of New York – Plattsburgh; University of Virginia, University of Pennsylvania; and Dartmouth College. 

Her multifaceted career underscores a relentless dedication to educational excellence, making her a respected leader and catalyst for positive change within the educational landscape. Dr. Wood-Garnett currently serves on the board of the Association for Advancing Quality in Educator Preparation; Girls Leadership – Asian Pacific Islander Research Cabinet; and the Global Science of Learning Education Network. She also leads the Women of Color Education Collaborative, a global initiative that supports diverse women in educational leadership positions.
