Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction
East Orange School District, New Jersey
REPORTS TO: Superintendent of Schools
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provides leadership in planning, coordinating, and delivery of all academic and instructional programs and services to improve the academic achievement and learning of all students.
- Supports the development of a safe and orderly environment in every school and every classroom in the city.
- Maintains a highly skilled faculty in every building that has access to robust professional development and real-time diagnostic data that will allow teachers to better evaluate student progress.
- Establishes supports to assist principals to be instructional leaders for their faculties and establish an extensive training program for teachers and administrators to prepare them for instructional leadership.
- Supervises the development, organization, and delivery of all curricular and instructional programs and services to ensure they are based on best practices and aligned with district and state standards and assessments.
- Directs, supervises, evaluates and monitors the operation of the Department of Special Education
- Supervises the development, organization, and delivery of district-wide professional development of teachers, principals, and instructional leaders that is based on best practices, standards for effective instruction, and assessment, and is aligned with district and state curriculum standards and assessments.
- Supervises the development, organization, and completion of outcome-based performance evaluations of all academic and instructional programs and services, including the presentation of regular public reports of district progress.
- Supervises the development and continuous assessment of district and state standards and the academic progress toward meeting those standards.
- Coordinates the collection of real-time student assessment data and subsequent training for principals and teachers in order to use data effectively.
- Directs the work of the Supervisor of Staff Development and works collaboratively with the Assistant Superintendent for Operations and Compliance and the Directors for Elementary and Secondary Education.
- Works directly with principals, teachers, and instructional leaders to implement the instructional goals, programs, and services of the district.
- Serves as a principal advisor and resource to the Superintendent on all matters related to the educational and instructional philosophy, programs and policies of the District.
- Works collaboratively with the Superintendent and School Business Administrator, and such other members of the cabinet, staff, and community as are required to attain district goals.

QUALIFICATIONS:
- Valid NJDOE School Administrator’s Certificate
- Minimum of five years’ successful experience as a school administrator
- A Master’s degree from an accredited institution, including 12 semester hours of professional education at the graduate level. Doctorate preferred
- Demonstrated increases in student achievement and reduction in the student achievement gap.
- Progressively responsible experience as an instructional leader in a school district with an ethnically diverse student body, a sizable student population of English- language learners, and a large percentage of students eligible for free or reduced lunch programs
- Knowledge of effective instructional programs and methodologies, and experience in evaluating such methodologies for effectiveness in meeting state standards for achievement.
- Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of issues and concerns related to public education and the administration of a large, diverse urban school district.
- Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of outcome-based performance evaluation programs and services.
- Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of student assessment and data collection and their use.
- Superior human relations skills and experience in working with diverse populations, community organizations, and other advocacy groups.
- Demonstrated ability to perform the essential duties in the area of responsibility with reasonable accommodation.
- Required criminal history background check, drug screening, and eligibility to work in the United States.

SELECTION PROCEDURE:
- Review of credentials submitted in the District’s digital candidate submission portal by the HR Department Lead or the designee identified by the Superintendent of Schools
- An oral screening interview to confirm an applicant’s qualifications and aptitude for the position
- A group of District professionals with links to the Assistant Superintendent’s responsibilities will serve as an interview panel for the candidates.
- The Superintendent of Schools will conduct the final interview and recommend a finalist for the Board of Education’s consideration.
- The appointment of a person is the responsibility of the Board of Education and will be made in compliance with Board policies related to the appointment of professional personnel
