Superintendent – Benton Harbor, MI
Job Description
The Benton Harbor Area School District is seeking an accomplished, equity-focused leader to serve as Superintendent of Schools beginning on July 1, 2025. The base salary will be $150,000 with an opportunity for mutually agreed upon incentives, such as but not limited to increasing student enrollment and achievement, as determined at the completion of the initial contract plus an excellent benefit package.
The District (BHASD) serves approximately 1,448 students across six schools, including a PreK-Kindergarten center, two elementary schools, a middle school, a high school, and an alternative education program. BHAS emphasizes equitable education to all students, particularly in an urban, predominately minority community (98% minority enrollment, 92.5% Black). The BHASD prioritizes diversity, equity, and inclusion.
The Special Education Department is robust, ensures compliance with state and federal regulations and provides personalized support. The district values tradition and community pride, with a history of accomplishments over 40 years. Parents prioritize a sense of belonging and find local ties to BHASD appealing.
BHASD encourages parental influence on district decisions, such as budget allocation. Crowdfunding efforts through DonorsChoose have funded 152 teacher projects, showing community support and teacher initiative to enhance classroom resources. The parents value the BHASD because the schools reflect their community’s demographics and culture, fostering a sense of identity for their child.
The search is confidential, and we are seeking candidates who have demonstrated success as instructional leaders, possess strong managerial, budget and communication skills, and have the ability to serve as a viable, collaborative partner with all stakeholders. The district’s size allows the superintendent to build deep relationships with staff, students, and the broader community. Previous experience as a superintendent or central office administrator is highly preferred.

Requirements:
Minimum Masters in Education, Preferred Doctorate. Have 5 years of successful classroom experience. The candidate must have or be qualified to obtain superintendent credentials as required by the State of Michigan.
