The 2025–26 cohort of the HYA and Howard University Superintendent Academy gathered in Washington, D.C. this past weekend for the official kickoff of the program, and the energy was nothing short of inspiring.
Hosted at the historic Howard University, the in-person event brought together aspiring superintendents from across the country for a day of connection, reflection, and purpose-driven learning. Designed to bolster K–12 leadership and expand the representation of Black, Hispanic, women, and other underrepresented groups in educational leadership, the Academy is a certificated program through Howard University. Each participant is paired with an executive coach, an experienced educational leader, to guide their development, refine career goals, and strengthen their impact as future superintendents.
The kickoff began with a warm welcome from Dr. Gregory C. Hutchings, Jr. and keynote address from Chancellor Lewis Ferebee that grounded participants in the Academy’s mission: to develop courageous, equity-centered leaders prepared to transform systems for all students. HYA President Dr. Nanci Perez was also in attendance to discuss the syllabus and capstone with participants. After a networking lunch with live entertainment, and a thought-provoking research presentation, the highlight of the afternoon came during the Superintendent Panel Discussion, where participants heard directly from seasoned leaders who have successfully navigated the challenges and opportunities of district leadership.
Each panelist brought a wealth of experience from roles spanning the superintendency, higher education, executive coaching, and national leadership development. Together, they reflected on topics such as board relations, strategic vision, closing equity gaps, and leading with integrity through crisis and change. Their insights provided powerful takeaways for the new cohort, blending personal stories of impact with practical guidance for the path ahead.Thank you to the panelists: Dr. Francisco Duran, Dr. Sharon Pepukayi, Dr. Jymil Thompson, and Dr. Nyah Hamlett.
The day concluded with a capstone discussion with Dr. Courtney Wilkerson, a campus tour of Howard University, and an evening social at Prima DC, a chance for participants, panelists, and facilitators to continue conversations and build the relationships that will sustain them throughout the program.
As one participant shared, “I truly enjoyed the first session of the Superintendent Academy on the beautiful campus of Howard University in Washington, D.C. — a room full of aspiring and current superintendents dedicated to shaping the future of public education.”
