More than 2,000 dedicated professionals work closely with approximately 11,300 students across Norwalk’s 21 schools, including 13 elementary schools, four middle schools, four high schools, one K-8 school, and a range of Pre-K programs serving children with both typical and special needs.
The district’s mission is brought to life through the Portrait of a Graduate (PoG), which serves as our roadmap to becoming future-ready. The PoG defines the essential skills and mindsets that all students need to thrive in today’s world and in the future. It is a shared vision for teaching and learning that empowers every student to think critically, communicate effectively, collaborate with purpose, and make meaningful contributions to their communities and the world.
That vision begins early and continues across every grade level, with programs and pathways designed to help students discover their interests, build on their strengths, and prepare for the future.
Elementary students can explore magnet programs in language, character, marine science, arts, and college readiness, while neighborhood schools offer strong community connections. Middle schoolers build on their interests through unique programs that help guide their high school choices. At the high school level, students gain hands-on experience, earn college credits and certifications, and engage in global learning, with growing pathways that prepare them for diverse career opportunities.
Beginning in Fall 2025, the district has offered a comprehensive K–12 International Baccalaureate (IB) continuum, providing globally recognized, rigorous academic opportunities from the early years through graduation.
Partnerships with community organizations has ensured that before and after-school programs are available throughout the city to both elementary and secondary students. Students can also take advantage of a full array of interscholastic athletics and extracurricular activities that cover a full range of interests, from computers to chess to community service. Programs like the Center for Youth Leadership and the Norwalk High School and Brien McMahon Marching Bands have received national recognition.
Norwalk Public Schools continues to lead other large Connecticut cities in academic performance and growth on state assessments. In 2025-26, the district also saw its chronic absenteeism rate drop below the Connecticut state average, and NPS has been invited to present its chronic absenteeism success at state and national conferences.
Since 2021, Norwalk Public Schools has operated under a Strategic Operating Plan with five measurable priority outcomes set each year as well as 25+ priority implementation steps. Results and accomplishments are publicly reviewed each year. Under the Strategic Plan, NPS has worked together with teachers, administrators, families, and the community to enhance curriculum and expand programs, add support for students who need it the most, and make structural changes.
In the same year, a comprehensive Norwalk Facilities Plan Study was conducted to identify the improvements and construction needed to support growing enrollment and the city’s families for years to come. A joint commitment by the City of Norwalk and the Board of Education has led to the renovation of Jefferson Marine Science Elementary School, the completion of a new school building for Cranbury Elementary and Dr. Ruby Shaw Elementary, and construction for a new Norwalk High School/P-TECH Norwalk.
