Jeff Melendez, Ed.D., is a school superintendent with a combined 25 years of teaching and administrative experience. Throughout his career, he has served small to mid-size, high-performing school districts in Fairfield County, CT and Westchester County, NY. Jeff earned his M.A., Ed.M., and Ed.D. degrees from Teachers College, Columbia University where he has also held an Adjunct Faculty position since 2009.

Dr. Melendez specializes in the areas of strategic planning, school climate and culture, leadership development, organizational design , budget development, and branding.

Strategic Planning – Jeff engages stakeholder groups throughout the district to develop or codify a shared vision and mission that will inform the development of a comprehensive, yet easy to use, strategic plan. The completed plan forms the basis for how the district operates as well as how human and fiscal resources are deployed. The strategic plan is also formatted for tracking progress and Board-level accountability.

School Climate and Culture – Jeff has experienced the challenges of leading change and overcoming resistance. Peter Drucker’s famous quote, “Culture eats strategy for breakfast”  is an axiom that leaders at all levels need to appreciate. His experience with developing a body of collaborative decision makers can help schools and districts to excel.

Leadership Development / Mentoring – Jeff works individually or in small groups with leaders to help them to think through the technical and adaptive challenges they face. His deep understanding of leadership theory, and decades of practice in the field, are foundational to his ability to support new and seasoned administrators.

Organizational Design – Jeff is a systems’ thinker who seeks to identify the root causes of issues and brainstorm potential solutions. His experience teaching every grade from kindergarten through graduate school and his decades of experience contribute to the well-rounded approach he takes in problem solving.

Budget Development – Jeff believes that a budget should be a reflection of priorities and understands the challenges facing school districts that endeavor to provide a high quality education at a reasonable cost to the taxpayer. Jeff’s creativity, insights, focus and negotiating skills have enabled him to significantly improve programs while maintaining a sub-zero budget for five consecutive years as a superintendent.

Branding – Jeff appreciates the significant impact that non-verbal communication such as branding has on the energy and appeal of a school and district. His attention to fine details can help those he consults to find their niche and refresh their image in a way that expresses vision and values with continuity.
