Job Description

The Hayden School District is seeking a superintendent beginning on July 1, 2023, with a base salary range expected to be $110,000 to $125,000 (based on experience); other benefits to be negotiated.

Hayden is in Routt County, CO and is located 25 miles west of Steamboat Springs, CO. The population of Hayden is approximately 2000. The Northwest Colorado town sits along U.S. Highway 40 in the Yampa River Valley between Craig and Steamboat Springs. Hayden is located near the Yampa Valley Regional Airport, by which Hayden is one of the smallest communities in the U.S. to have direct passenger jet service provided by American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Southwest Airlines and United Airlines on a scheduled basis. The tranquil Hayden area is a dream-come-true for the outdoor enthusiast. Residents enjoy western lifestyle activities such as hunting, fishing, golfing, boating, hiking and snow machining. Steamboat, a world-class ski resort, (both alpine and cross-country) is just a short drive away for nightlife, first-class dining and resort attractions.

The Hayden School district consists of 687 square miles, and has a student enrollment of 450. The 73 employees include three principals that also serve as the instructional coach at their level, thirty-five certified teachers, two counselors, two nursing staff, and 2.5 administrative assistants. The average teacher retention rate for full-time certified teachers for the past three years is 75.01% and 64% of the certified staff have a master’s degree or higher. The District has an operational budget of $8,318,127M. The District is currently in a strong fiscal position and has been working on several regional efforts to ensure viability for the future ahead.

The Hayden School District provides education at three school levels in one building: elementary, middle, and high. In 2018, the District received a Colorado State BEST (Building Excellent Schools Today) Grant for $38.9M and the Hayden community passed a $22.3M bond to supplement the construction of the new PK – 12 school. The project broke ground in March of 2019 and was completed in October, 2020. The state of the art facility is the hub of the community. Additionally, the Hayden community has passed three (3) mill levy overrides to provide additional funding of approximately $928,000 annually to help support the Hayden School District. The transportation department has a fleet of buses that are all under eight years old and include two 14-passenger buses along with an electric bus.

As a District, the Hayden Schools have strived to become a District of Distinction as identified by the Colorado Department of Education (CDE) based on the Performance Frameworks. The achievement of this goal is outlined in the strategic plan Hayden School District Strategic Plan

The Hayden School District is rated as Accredited by the Colorado Department of Education. Hayden School District meets requirements in Finance, Safety, and Accountability Participation Rate. The Hayden School District offers extra-curricular activities for all students, including sports, music, speech, FBLA, FFA, and the National Honor Society. The District also has a strong CTE program which includes welding, business, and agriculture science. Concurrent enrollment is also offered through Colorado Northwestern Community College for high school students. The elementary, middle school and high school are all supported by strong Parent/Teacher Organizations (PTO).

The District has a shared grant writer and has received and continues to receive a tremendous amount of grant support through various organizations. Such grants include the Elementary Corp Counseling Grant in the amount of $160,000, the Suicide Prevention – Behavioral Health Coordinator Grant (5 years) in the amount of $500,000, an Electric School Bus Grant in the amount of $317,000, Education Fund Board funds of approximately $200,000 annually, Craig-Scheckman Family Foundation Grants with an annual average of $60,000, and over a $1,000,000 RISE Grant to name a few.

April 20 – Finalists day in the district
April 21 – Final interviews with Board of Education
Early May – Board of Education approves contract and announces new Superintendent
July 1, 2023 – Superintendent officially begins with Hayden
