Job Description
The City of Rye is located in southern Westchester County, on Long Island Sound, 25 miles from New York City. Approximately 16,000 residents enjoy 5.8 miles of water vistas, nature and wildlife preserves, an active downtown, a municipal golf club, walking trails, and history dating to the 1600s.
The Rye City School District (RCSD) is widely known for academic excellence. Rye’s 2,836 students attend one of five schools: three elementary, one middle school and one high school (that share a building), with the average class size of 19 students or less. The high school graduation rate is 100% with a 98% college attendance rate.
The RCSD includes three elementary and one middle school that are National Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence; Rye High School provides a full range of curriculum opportunities at Regents, Honors, and Advanced Placement levels. In the fall of 2024, Rye High School began offering the AP Capstone diploma designation. Beginning in the fall of 2025, Rye High School anticipates offering an International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme for students in grades 11-12. The Academy at Rye High School is an academically rigorous program that serves students who learn best in a nontraditional educational environment. Rye Middle School follows a team structure and offers a variety of electives, advanced math and science, along with engineering for all students. At the elementary level, the District has been focused on improving its comprehensive literacy program with the incorporation of science of reading research. A constructivist mathematics approach builds from kindergarten into middle school.
All schools have innovative learning spaces, with active learning classrooms in all buildings. The majority of K-12 classrooms are equipped with interactive TVs. Learning Centers and support service personnel, including psychologists, school counselors, RNs, speech and language therapists, occupational therapists, English Language Learner teachers, and academic specialists, are available at all grade levels. There are a wide range of programs and services for students who require additional support. Integrated Co-Teaching (ICT), Life Skills (K-12) and a robust MTSS process enable the District to provide appropriate programs along the Special Education Continuum of services.
The District is committed to the continued development of faculty and staff through excellent professional learning opportunities. Following a coaching model, the District has six full-time instructional coaches who support teachers and staff across all levels. New teachers participate in a supportive mentoring program matched with peer mentors.
In 2014, a $16.35 million, 17,000 square foot science wing was added to the High School. The wing features 12 chemistry, biology, physics, and earth science labs. In 2019, the community approved a $79.9M bond for a multiphase, multi-year strategic capital improvement plan at all five schools; construction began in June 2020 and is due to be completed in 2025. The capital project has led to the full renovation of two elementary schools and upgrades to the library media centers at all five schools. At the shared HS/MS campus, the performing arts center, gymnasium, turf field and track, nursing facilities, and many instructional spaces were upgraded
and two innovation labs for project based learning were constructed. An upgrade to the HVAC systems at all schools was also completed. Technology infrastructure has been updated to support 1:1 and BYOD programming and to increase capability for future emerging technologies.
There are active, supportive parent organizations at each school that collaborate with the District to enhance opportunities for students. The Rye Fund for Education is a community foundation that provides significant financial support in the form of grants to enhance the arts, academics and athletics.
In 2017, the seven member Board of Education adopted The Rye Commitment. In the Rye Commitment the Board states that “The Board of Education of the Rye City School District understands that a world class education requires hard work, collaboration, and dedication from everyone in the community. We take our responsibility of overseeing the academic and social-emotional development of our children in an equitable, inclusive environment very seriously. We are genuinely grateful to the faculty, staff, administration, families, and community for all of the hard work and support provided everyday to educate our children to the highest of national and state standards.” The Rye Commitment is the foundation for all work undertaken by the Board and Administration.
The position has a start date of July 1, 2025 with an anticipated salary range of $285,000 to $325,000.
