Job Description

Western Dakota Technical College (WDTC) is in Rapid City, South Dakota. WDTC seeks an experienced Chief Financial Officer to support the institution in its next chapter of growth and innovation. The CFO serves as a key member of the President’s cabinet and is responsible for the effective conduct of the business operations of the college. The CFO will help the institution use its resources strategically to fulfill its educational mission and improve operations. The CFO will work with businesses, the WDTC Foundation, and other partners to enhance operational effectiveness and support growth.

Core Competencies:

Financial Analysis & Reporting

  • Experience in analyzing, interpreting, and presenting financial and operational data
  • Experience in governmental accounting and/or advanced accounting principles and practices
  • Knowledge and ability to seek and leverage advanced financial and accounting information systems

Regulatory & Policy Knowledge

  • Knowledge of policies and procedures, federal and state regulations that govern higher education and/or NFP (preferred, although not required)

Technology Infrastructure

  • Knowledge of technological infrastructure necessary to operationally support an organization

Risk Management & Safety

  • Knowledge of campus safety principles, insurance requirements and processes, and risk management necessary to ensure budget efficiency, safety, and the well-being of the organization

Business Development

  • Proven abilities to cultivate business and partner relationships aligned to growing an organization, including driving new revenue streams

Human Resources (Preferred)

  • Exposure to employment law, compensation structures, workforce planning, benefits administration, and overall HR operations

Executive Leadership Skills

  • Business Development: Relationship builder who creates powerful partnerships with industry, government, and community stakeholders
  • Strategic Team Leader: Skilled at assembling, empowering, and aligning complementary talent while fostering an inclusive culture
  • Emotional Intelligence: Authentic, empathetic leader who builds trust through ethical decision-making and transparent communication

Position Qualifications

  • MBA and/or master’s in finance, Accounting, or Business Operations.
  • Minimum of five years’ experience with demonstrated success as a financial and/or operational officer;
  • This is an on-campus position
